According to the brains behind AFAA, Sunny Graham, "... AFAA got started around 1984-85. Like many organizations, AFAA got started then to secure for its members a base from which they can occasionally partake in warm camaraderie, ease any feeling of nostalgia for the motherland and of course to eat and party... Many of the initial board members and officers are still current members."

More formally, the Austin Filipino-American Association was organized to participate in activities for the betterment of the Filipino-American Community in Austin, TX and its surrounding areas. Membership to the Association is open to all Filipino-American families and individuals. Individuals who are not Filipino-American but have an interest in the activities of the Association are also welcome to join.
