Description:
Alaala: Reexamining Philippine National Memory in the Diaspora is FASA’s first symposium, and the first Philippine/Filipino-American studies conference of its kind in Ohio. Says Cristina Briboneria, senior and FASA co-chair, "This is an age where we begin to search and understand ourselves and each other within the community. So as infants we search. We search for meaning and understanding. We look and feel until we understand this is who we were and what we have become. We acknowledge the challenges for each step we take as we grow as individuals and as an organization."

The Filipino American Students Association (FASA) is a chartered student organization at Oberlin College whose goals are to provide support for Filipino-American students and to increase awareness of Philippine and Filipino-American cultures and histories on campus and in the greater Oberlin community. FASA organizes cultural and academic events and ExCo classes. For years an informal collective of Filipino-American students functioning under the name "P-noise", FASA became a chartered student organization with the college in 2002. In its first year, FASA continued old traditions by recruiting more members and appointing officer positions. In its first year, FASA also created new traditions by holding its first annual Bayanihan Banquet in December 2002, then performing Philippine/hip-hop fusion dances in Colors of Rhythm, an annual dance and music concert organized by students of color. The 2004-2005 school year will be FASA’s third year in existence.
