Description:
notjustsilk.com is an online retail boutique specializing in Asian merchandise from the entire continent. Notjustsilk.com was started by Arlene Alegre, an Asian-American and graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology's Master of Arts in Gallery and Retail Art Administration. She received her undergraduate degree in Marketing Management, and was the recipient of the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award in 2001.
The concept of the store was realized through her experiences and training working for the Newark Museum cataloguing Asian textiles. "There are lots of Asian communities here in New York City, yet there isn't a store that bridges these different groups together." Arlene realized. Asia has many craft traditions, and Arlene intends to promote these items, especially those who are still underrepresented in the American market.
In the meantime, due to astronomical rent prices in New York City, Arlene will be promoting her site through various flea markets ini New York and New Jersey.
