Description:
The South Asian Association of Maine is the cultural representation of people of the SAARC Countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) and is affiliated to the University of Maine, Orono.
The primary objective of SAAM is to promote interest and understanding of South Asian cultures and provide occasions for friendship and cultural interaction among members and with the community at large. Our members participate in various events across the University of Maine campus, including in-class guest participations, university events like Culturefest and brown-bag cultural discussions. SAAM members have a tradition of actively involving themselves in such events as an opportunity to enlighten the university community on the richness and diversity of their exotic cultures.
The most important occasion for SAAM members is the annual Diwali cultural and religious event, which sees the maximum participation from all active and associate members from within the University community and around Maine. Students interested in South Asian cultures often present their talents in music, dance and dramaturgy for the event. A variety of exotic foods accentuate the breathtaking variety of South Asian culinary and spices.
