Akshaya Patra addresses two of the most immediate challenges India is facing today: hunger and education. Founded in 2000, TAPF implements the world's largest NGO-run school feeding program, currently providing free, nutritious meals to over 780,000 children in India every day. Because the Akshaya Patra lunch is the only complete meal many of these children receive on a daily basis, it is a vital part of their health and well-being. The lunches create incentives for the children to attend school, stay in school, and provide the necessary nourishment that increases their awareness and learning skills. The program has produced dramatic results in enrollment, attendance, method of delivery and approach. It is a pioneering project in India's social and development sector, which uses technology in the form of highly efficient centralized kitchens, to minimize cost, time, and labor in the procurement, preparation and delivery of the meals. Akshaya Patra has a goal of serving one million children by the year 2010 by strengthening, expanding, and replicating this model across India. The dream of Akshaya Patra is to ensure that no child in India is denied equitable access to nutritious food, education, and quality health. Akshaya Patra USA is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization.
