Description:
Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment and Leadership (APPEAL) is a national social justice network of organizations and individuals working towards a tobacco-free Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.
Our mission is to prevent tobacco use among the Asian American and Pacific Islander community through five priority areas: network development, capacity building, education, advocacy, and leadership development.
Founded in 1994, APPEAL has established itself as the only national AAPI network providing key technical assistance and resources on tobacco control. APPEAL's accomplishments include:
- Trained more than 100 AAPI community leaders from across the U.S. and Pacific Islands to conduct tobacco control activities in their communities
- Launched major advocacy campaigns to counter the targeting of AAPI communities by the tobacco industry
- Conducted more than 70 capacity building trainings with organizations throughout the U.S. and Pacific
- Published educational kits on AAPI tobacco control issues, including making tobacco relevant to AAPI communities; needs assessment; program evaluation; and mobilizing AAPI communities on tobacco and the tobacco settlement
- Developed national tobacco control policy recommendations for comprehensive approach to AAPI tobacco control issues
- Provided support (e.g., mini-grants and technical assistance) to community-based organizations doing local tobacco control work
